At least 496 children have been raped from January 1 to June 30 this year across the country, says a report of Action for Social Development (ASD), a child rights organization.
According to the survey, the incidents of child repression and rape have hit 41% high in the six months of this year than the last year. Last year, 571 children were raped across the country.
The statistic was disclosed today at a programme jointly arranged by the ASD and Bangladesh Child Rights Forum, marking the World Children’s Day on Monday.
A total of 1.28 million children are engaged in risky jobs in the country while 2 million are serving as domestic help, stated the report. “Of the 2 million underaged household help, 83% are girls.”
Speakers at the programme said the incidents of child repression and rape are on rise due to the culture of of impunity prevailing in the country.
They have called upon the authorities to take strict action against child repression and ensure punishments for the offenders.
