8 hurt as RMG workers, police clash in Kanchpur

At least eight people reportedly received injuries as RMG workers locked horn with the law enforcers, turing the Kanchpur area under ​​Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj into a battlefield.

According to the locals, hundreds of workers of Sinha Garments took to the street this morning to press home their demands including maternity leave, payment of leave during vacation, payment of monthly salary and other dues. Being informed, a team of Industrial Police rushed in and tried to remove the agitated workers from the street.

At one stage, the workers started throwing bricks at the police, triggering a chase and counter chase between the two sides. Later, police fired teargas cells and charged batton on the protestors.

Sonargaon Police Station OC Moniruzzaman Monir said: “Efforts are underway to control the situation by talking to the owners.”

The demonstration was undergoing till filing the news at 12 noon.
