Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is taking leave from its head office ‘BGMEA Bhaban’ in Hatirjheel on April 3. The building will be shifted to its own building with two towers in sector 17 of Uttara.
BGMEA President Md Siddiqur Rahman expressed hope that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will formally inaugurate both of those buildings through video conferences from Ganobhaban.
He said, “The construction work of the two new buildings has already been completed to four-storey.”
The BGMEA has given the pledge to the court on April 12, 2019, that the present building will be evacuated.
This building is being built across the 5-bigha land of the lake sector view of Sector 17. The construction of the 13-storied new building completed to four-storey included basement. Each floor has a volume of 40,000 square feet. The new BGMEA building also has an exhibition hall of 40,000 square feet.
On October 2, 2010, the news was published in an English newspaper that the BGMEA building on Begunbari Khal adjoining Kawranbazar was constructed without the approval of RAJUK. The same day, the Supreme Court lawyer DHM Moniruddin presented the report to the court.
Then the next day, the High Court self-ruled and issued the rule why the BGMEA building will not be ordered to break.
On April 3, 2011, the High Court bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury ordered to demolish the BGMEA building. In the hearing, the BGMEA was asked to break the building with its own finance.
Before the building was constructed, it was ordered to bring the condition of the land where it was in the state. On April 5 of that year, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court suspended the verdict of BGMEA for 6 months.
Later, the extension of the Appellate Division suspension was increased. Two years later, on March 19, 2013, the full verdict of the High Court’s 69 pages was published. BGMEA authority ‘live to appeal’ after receiving the full copy of the High Court verdict. That was dismissed on June 2, 2016.
Then, BGMEA again asked for a review. After the hearing, on June 2, 2016, the four-member Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed the appeal.
