Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Tuesday asked his party leaders and activists to get ready for ‘early parliamentary elections’.
Speaking at a rally in front of his party’s Kakrail office, the former military ruler also said his party will join the general election whenever it is held, no matter which party takes part in it or not.
“I read in the newspapers that there’re could be an early election. We need to prepare for it from now on. We’ve already started holding divisional conferences….we’ll invigorate our district units by the next year,” he told his party colleagues.
Jatiya Party’s youth wing, Jatiya Jubo Sanghati, arranged the rally, marking the National Youth Day 2016.
Ershad said there is no alternative to making Jatiya Party stronger to have a success in the next election. “Keep it in mind that no one joins hands with weaker. We must reinforce our party to win the polls.”
Though he is certain about joining the national election, the Jatiya Party chief voiced doubt whether the Zilla Parishad polls to be held in December will be free and fair.
“The Zilla Parishad elections are going to be held in the days to come. We’re eager to take part in it. But, why will we go to the polls? I’m doubtful about a fair election as there’s still a culture of capturing voting centres, resorting to terrorism, bombing and casting fake votes.”
He said the election will be meaningless if it is not held in a free and fair manner.
Ershad, also the Prime Minister’s special envoy, criticised the government for what he said its failure to ensure peace, security, generate jobs and check corruption and drug abuse. “People now want to see Jatiya Party in power as they look for a change. A scope has been created for us again.”
