A professor of Geography and Environment department at Jahangirnagar University (JU) has been accused of sexual harassment.
A female student raised the allegation of sexual harassment against Shahedur Rashid, a professor of the department. She filed a written compliant to Vice-Chancellor about her allegations.
In the compliant, the student mentioned, ‘Professor Shahedur Rashid was my research supervisor. On July 2, 2018, I went to his room at around 2.30 pm. At that time, he was talking with an associate professor and an assistant professor in his room. In their presence, Professor Shahedur Rashid discussed about my research. But when those two teachers left, he locked the door of the room and sat in the chair beside me. Suddenly he asked about my personal matters as how my relationship with my friend is going on, holding my hand.
Later, he put his other hand on my shoulder and tempted me to improve my test results and building up my career. Due to his unusual behaviour, I was forced to open the door lock.”
In the charge sheet, the student also mentioned, “This kind of indecent and harassing behaviour from a teacher is not desirable. After this incident I was upset and informed my friend. He advised me to inform the university administration about this harassment.’
On condition of anonymity, a teacher of the department said, “After this incident, the suffering student changed the department and got admission in government and politics department. There was no investigation into the matter. Recently, Professor Shahedur Rashid joined the Vice Chancellor leaning Politics. That`s why I think an attempt has been made to silence the allegation.”
The complaining student said, “I do not want to say anything about the complaint. I’ll talk when it needed.”
Earlier, in a press conference held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Thursday afternoon, Vice-Chancellor Prof Farzana Islam said, “One such complaint came to me. I was sent it to the university`s anti-sexual harassment cell. They are investigating it.”
While trying to contact the accused Professor Shahedur Rashid several times in the cell phone, he could not be contacted.
