A woman, her mother and her daughter among eight people were killed after a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram in the small hours of Thursday.
Twenty more people were injured in the accident that took place in the upazila around 1:30am, Mohammad Aman Ullah, sub-inspector at Chiringa highway police in Chakaria told Prothom Alo.
Six of the deceased are Taslima Aktar, 20, wife of a certain Zisan from Chhankhola Nayapara in Cox’s Bazar, and her 2-year-old daughter, Taslima’s mother Hasina Mamtaz, 45, Nurul Huda, 25, son of Bhandu Mia from Uttar Medhakacchapia in Chakaria, Afzal Hossain Sohel, 30, son of Sirajul Islam from Sikdarpara of Lohagara and Sayem, 22, son of Siddik from Shekherkhil in Banshlhali.
The injured were taken to several hospitals in Chakaria and Cox’s Bazar. Some of them are critically injured, police said.
The law enforcement said a luxurious Relax Paribahan bus from Dhaka hit a microbus from Cox’s Bazar, leaving the microbus crumpled and eight people dead on the spot.
SI Aman Ullah said the driver of the bus and his assistant managed to flee the scene. Police, however, seized the bus and the microbus.
The law enforcement members are currently working to handover the bodies to their relatives, the SI added.
