The voting in 78 upazilas has ended and the vote counting is underway. Tomorrow, the DUCSU election will take place at Dhaka University after 28 years. The ruling party Awami League is leaving no stone unturned to be prepared fully. However, the party did not show much interest in its upazila elections.
AL’s responsible sources confirmed that although the upazila elections are underway, AL is focused on holding leadership in DUCSU election. The party wants to have control over the students across the country by winning this election. Therefore, AL has announced its 25-member panel making BCL President Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon the Vice President, General Secretary Golam Rabbani the GS and Saddam Hussain the AGS. The central AL is holding meeting almost every day to ensure victory for this panel.
In the upazila elections, the AL candidates are the favorite to win. However, the rebel candidates of AL are creating some problems for them. At least in 100 upazilas, the AL candidates will have to contest. However, the party seems to be cynical about this issue. There have been no steps taken to bring the rebel candidates to justice in light of party’s constitution. Because, they know that, whoever wins, will on favor of AL.
The main obstacle for BCL is the quota protesters. Besides, other opposition organizations are using the anti-government sentiment to serve their purposes.
The influence of DUCSU in the politics of Bangladesh is very significant. A number of central leaders of AL have come from DUCSU. In the past 28 years there had been no DUCSU election, therefore, this process was disrupted. So, AL does not want to lose DUCSU leadership.
