When you walk through the road named Rua do Benformoso here in downtown area of Lisbon, you hardly imagine that you are in a different country or cultural! As there’s a huge number of Bangladeshi people roaming around this street, having coffee and gossiping with each other.

It’s just like a mini Bangladesh here in Lisbon and we are now a community of around 40 thousand people living in Portugal. Though officials estimation is less than that but it was started with only 6 people back in 1990.

Being a hub for the immigration, it became the popular destination for lots of people who was illegal in Europe and Portuguese government gave them residency in a very flexible way. Since 2007 when Portuguese Govt. passed a ordinance to give legality for the immigrants who was living illegally in Portugal and as well as in Europe, lots of Bangladeshi people started to come here in Portugal and got their residence permit.

Bangladeshi community’s people has a good reputation as they are involving with no major crime in the last three decades. Moreover they proofed themselves in so many ways. Now they are dominating figure in souvenirs sector at the tourist zone in downtown area of Lisbon and also the same strength hold in Halal meat supply.

There’s emerging a booming possibilities of Bangladeshi curry industry among the local and tourists as well in the last couple of year. Near about 25 Bangladeshi restaurant already established in Lisbon tourists area and now almost every major city of Portugal, anyone can find a Bangladeshi restaurant with quality food and excellent service.

Bangladeshi people are very energetic and they have the quality to develop their own business or companies. They like to be an entrepreneur creating job for themselves and also for the others. Around 3000 people working in downtown area of Lisbon and most of this business initiative is organized by Bangladeshi young people.

In recent time they are contributing and involving more and more in tourism sectors, Ubering, food delivery, education and main stream politics of Portugal. They are contributing greatly to the economy and social security of this country. Good number of Bangladeshi people working in the agricultural sectors as well.

They also established two mosques here in the Bangali dominated area where people from all the Muslim communities offer their prayer regularly. A proposed plan of 9 million euros has passed in the municipalities of Lisbon to build Bangladesh Islamic Centre, Baitul Mukarram Mosque Complex in Matrim Moniz, Lisbon.

Almost 1500 Bangladeshi people already got their Portuguese nationality and moved to different European countries especially to the United Kingdom (UK), Canada & America.

In last couple of years there’s a large amount of people around 5 thousand gathered during the prayer of Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha organized by Bangladeshi community in the Matrim Moniz park, downtown area of Lisbon. It’s considered to be one of the largest gathering of Muslim community in Europe.

To celebrate the International Mother Language Day, Bangladesh Community has able to establish two permanent Martyrs Monument, one in the capital city Lisbon and other one in Porto, the commercial capital of Portugal.

In every 21th of February Bangladesh community along with local government and large scale of highly diplomatic person present to these Martyrs Monument to show their gratitude who shed their blood and sacrifice their life for mother tongue back in 1952.

Every national day and cultural heritage of Bangladesh celebrates here with great passion, respect and enthusiasm. Huge amount of community’s people join there especially in the celebration of Bangla New Year and some others major festival of Bangladesh.
