Engineering students clash with police near Shahbagh
Engineering students from BUET and some private universities engaged in a clash with police at the InterContinental Dhaka intersection on Wednesday afternoon while staging demonstrations to press home their demands.
Police later managed to disperse the agitating students by firing tear gas and lobbing sound grenades.
Earlier, the students began a march towards State Guesthouse Jamuna, the official residence of Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, from a blockade movement they enforced at Shahbagh intersection.
In front of InterContinental Dhaka, they attempted to break through police barricades, initiating the clash.
Their demands are: preventing diploma engineers from using “engineer title” before their names, preventing them from getting promotion to the ninth grade of government services, and allowing bachelor degree holders to apply for tenth grade posts.
Around 11am, they enforced their pre-announced blockade at the Shahbagh intersection, demanding the implementation of three demands that call for an end to “unjust” professional entitlements for diploma degree holders.
They warned that unless a notification is issued in this regard by 1pm, they would march towards the Secretariat. Students from RUET, CHUET and KUET were expected to join the movement.
