![]() Freedom fighter buried without guard of honour in Cumilla amid administrative negligence allegations A freedom fighter was buried without a guard of honour in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla on Thursday, allegedly due to negligence by the local administration in arranging the state tribute in time. The incident has triggered criticism among fellow freedom fighters and local residents. The deceased, Abdus Sattar, 78, passed away in Dhaka on November 5. He was a resident of Mahalakshmipara village under Brahmanpara Sadar Union. During his professional life, he served in several government departments, including the ministries of communications and law. He had been living with his son in Dhaka in his later years. Following his first funeral prayer in Dhaka, his body was brought to his ancestral village on Thursday afternoon, arriving at around 5:30pm. His family waited for representatives of the local administration to arrange the customary guard of honour before burial. However, as no official arrived, the family eventually proceeded with the burial without the state honours traditionally accorded to freedom fighters. Allegations have surfaced that the matter was brought to the attention of Brahmanpara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Munni Islam several times, but she did not take the necessary steps, citing the late hour. The deceased's brother, Shahjahan, expressed deep disappointment over the incident. "We wanted to bid farewell to my brother with the honour he deserved, but that never happened. A man who fought for nine months with a weapon in his hands to liberate this country was denied the recognition he deserved at his final farewell," he said. Another freedom fighter from Mahalakshmipara village, Abdus Sattar Molla, also expressed anger over the incident. "Even if a guard of honour could not be arranged after sunset, at least someone from the administration could have come to pay their final respects. But that did not happen either. As a fellow freedom fighter, it is difficult to accept such disrespect towards a comrade," he said. Brahmanpara Upazila Freedom Fighters' Commander Idris Mia Master said they had remained in contact with the administration and repeatedly requested a guard of honour and an armed salute for the deceased. He said UNO Munni Islam had informed them that a guard of honour could not be given after sunset. Meanwhile, Brahmanpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Faruk Hossain said police had made preparations to participate in the ceremony, including sending a full contingent in a pickup vehicle. A team from the police lines had also arrived to perform the bugle call. "However, police cannot independently conduct the guard of honour without a representative of the upazila administration," he said, adding that police personnel had attended the funeral prayer. Contacted over the matter, UNO Munni Islam said a guard of honour was not arranged because the body arrived after sunset. "Preparations were made, but there was uncertainty over the time of the body's arrival from Dhaka," she said. She added that no one contacted her after the Maghrib prayer, making it impossible to arrange the ceremony.
