Former MP Nabi Newaz Placed on 5-Day Remand Nabi Newaz, former Member of Parliament for Jhenaidah-3 and a presidium member of the ruling Awami League’s central committee, has been placed on a five-day remand in connection with the killing of domestic worker Liza Akter in Dhaka’s Ramna area during the anti-discrimination student movement. The order was passed today (Wednesday) by Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman following a hearing. Police presented Nabi Newaz before the court and sought a seven-day remand for interrogation. The defense lawyer appealed for bail and requested the remand be canceled. State prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favor of the remand. After hearing both sides, the court approved a five-day remand. Nabi Newaz was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) police last Friday from the capital, and the following day, he was sent to jail. According to the case details, on July 18, during an anti-discrimination student protest in Ramna, domestic worker Liza Akter was shot and injured. She died on July 22 while undergoing treatment. On September 5, Liza’s father, Md. Zainal Shikder, filed a murder case naming 174 individuals, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Nabi Newaz was listed as the 170th accused in the case. Nabi Newaz was elected as an MP from Jhenaidah-3 in the controversial 2014 national election, contesting under the banner of the Bangladesh Awami League. |
