Taposh Shown Arrest in Attempted Murder Case in Gulshan, Thanks Judge Three Times

A Dhaka court has shown the arrest of Kaushik Hossain Taposh, Managing Director of television channel "Gaan Bangla", in an attempted murder case involving rickshaw puller Jabbar Ali Hawlader in the capital's Gulshan area. The arrest was recorded today (Wednesday) by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq. While standing in the dock, Taposh thanked the judge three times. He later insisted on using the elevator to be taken down from the courtroom.

At around 10:45 AM, Taposh was brought to court from the custody cell wearing a bulletproof jacket, helmet, and handcuffs. He appeared to be smiling. He was taken to the second floor of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. His helmet was removed before he was placed in the dock. At 10:52 AM, the hearing began regarding showing his arrest in the case filed at Gulshan Police Station.

During the hearing, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Abdus Salam, said: "His name has come up in the investigation. We request that he be shown arrested in this case. Interrogating him after showing arrest could yield important information."

Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court stated, "Taposh of Gaan Bangla was an associate of fascist Hasina. He needs to be interrogated in connection with this case after being shown arrested."

At 10:55 AM, the court granted the request to show his arrest. Standing in the dock, Taposh then said with a tone of irritation: "Thank you, thank you, thank you." He was then taken to the court veranda with his helmet back on. He insisted on using the elevator to go down, but police officers told him, "The elevator doesn’t operate from here." He was then escorted on foot back to the custody cell. This time, he remained silent.

The case stems from an incident on July 19 last year during an anti-discrimination movement, when protesters were fired upon in front of Confidence Tower in Shahjadpur, Gulshan. Jabbar Ali Hawlader was shot in the incident. He later filed a case naming 109 accused, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has since fled to India. Kaushik Hossain Taposh is one of the accused in that case.
