Former Mayor Atiqul, IGP Shahidul, Major Ziaul Among 13 Accused in Tribunal

Hearings are scheduled today, Monday, at the International Crimes Tribunal in multiple cases involving killings, mass murders during the July uprising, and crimes against humanity—specifically the 2013 Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Dhaka’s Motijheel area.

Among the accused presented before the tribunal are former Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Md. Atiqul Islam, former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, and retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan—along with a total of 13 defendants.

Several former law enforcement officials are also among the accused. They include former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Molla Nazrul Islam, former Assistant Commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Javed Iqbal, former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uttara East Police Station Md. Mujibur Rahman, and Constable Hossain Ali.

Additionally, leaders of the ruling Awami League have been implicated. They include Shahinur Miah, Education Secretary of Uttara East Thana Awami League; Manowar Islam Chowdhury, President of Uttara West Thana Awami League; Abdullah Al Mamun, Organizational Secretary of Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League; Md. Bashir Uddin, President of Sector 6 Uttara Awami League; and Delwar Hossain, President of Ward-1 Jubo League (Awami League's youth wing) under Dhaka North.
