ICT trial over Abu Sayed murder starts today
Trial over the murder of Abu Sayed, a martyrs of last year’s uprising, begins Wednesday with the delivery of introductory speech at the International Crimes Tribunal-2.
Witness testimonies will also likely be presented today before a three-member panel of judges led by ICT-2 Chairman Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
On 6 August, the tribunal framed charges against 30 individuals, 24 of whom remain fugitive. On 22 July, the state appointed four lawyers to represent the fugitives.
Abu Sayed was student of English department at the Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, and a key leader of last year’s job quota reform movement. On 16 July 2024, he was shot by police at point-blank range during a largely peaceful demonstration, despite posing no apparent threat. He died shortly afterwards from the pellet wounds.
