DUCSU VP candidate Jalal sent to jail in attempted murder case
A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) vice-president candidate Jalal Ahmad Jalal to jail in an attempted murder case filed by his roommate.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Minhazur Rahman passed the order after police produced him before the court seeking his detention.
According to the case statement, Rabiul Haque, a student of the Department of Political Science, returned to his dormitory room around midnight and fell asleep. Jalal later entered the room, switched on the light and began dragging a chair, which woke Rabiul. When Rabiul asked him to keep the noise down as he needed to go to the library in the morning, Jalal became enraged.
At one stage, Jalal allegedly hit Rabiul on the head with a wooden chair with the intent to kill. He then tried to strike Rabiul with a tube light, which instead hit the left side of his chest, leaving him injured.
Police said Jalal initially admitted to the allegations. Verification of his personal details is ongoing. The petition described the case as one of significant importance that has drawn public attention.
Earlier, around 12:30 am on Tuesday, Jalal allegedly stabbed his roommate Rabiul inside room 462 of Mohsin Hall at Dhaka University.
In immediate response, Hall Provost Dr Md Sirajul Islam expelled Jalal from the dormitory and later filed an attempted murder case with Shahbagh Police Station.
