![]() Mother Killed While Trying to Save Son During Clash Over ‘Joy Bangla’ Slogan The incident took place around 8:00 PM on Saturday (May 16) in the Typalong area of Rajapalong Union under Ukhiya upazila. According to locals, tension had been brewing in the area for about a week after “Joy Bangla” slogans were written on walls. Local BNP leaders reportedly filed complaints with the police over the matter, although no case was filed. Since then, the area had remained tense. On Saturday night, a dispute reportedly erupted after a “Happy” reaction was given to a Facebook post made by local Chhatra Dal leader Jisan. The reaction allegedly led to an altercation involving Chhatra League leader Yunus. At one stage, Yunus was allegedly assaulted, and NGO worker Abdur Rahman (Imran) stepped in to protect him. Family members claim that the attackers then turned on Imran and began beating him as well. According to the family, Imran’s mother, Syeda Begum, was attacked while trying to save her son. She was rescued in critical condition and taken to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead. She was the wife of local resident Sabbir Ahmed. At the hospital, the victim’s relatives accused local BNP leader Mizan Sikdar, Abdul Karim, Akash, Saiful Sikdar, Syed Babul, Mahbubur Rahman, Salam Sikdar, Chhatra Dal leader Jisan, and ambulance driver Shamsul Alam of leading the attack. Meanwhile, after the assault on Yunus, police arrived at the scene and took him into custody. However, no BNP or Chhatra Dal activists had been arrested in connection with the incident as of filing this report. Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mujibur Rahman said a woman’s death had occurred at the hospital and that the exact cause of death was being investigated. Following an autopsy, her funeral prayer was held after Zuhr prayer, and she was buried at the Typalong graveyard.
