BTMA Meets PM Tarique Rahman; High-Level Committee to Address Textile Sector Challenges

A delegation from the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), led by its President Shawkat Aziz Russell, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday.

During the meeting, the delegation discussed the current state of Bangladesh’s primary textile and export-oriented ready-made garment (RMG) industry, highlighting the sector’s pressing challenges and the policy support required to ensure its sustainable growth. BTMA emphasized the industry’s critical role in driving economic growth, creating employment, and increasing export earnings.

The association presented several key proposals for the Prime Minister’s consideration, including:

Formulating a competitive tariff, tax, financial support, and export promotion policy aligned with those of competing countries for the primary textile and export-oriented apparel industries.

Introducing a special refinancing scheme with a maximum interest rate of 5% for existing loans in the export-oriented primary textile sector.

Simplifying the implementation of the government’s BDT 20,000 crore working capital support package, including project-based Credit Information Bureau (CIB) assessments and temporary relaxation of CIB requirements for closed or partially operational factories.

Providing capital incentives and long-term low-interest financing to encourage technology modernization (BMRE), energy efficiency improvements, and new investments.

Establishing a Fast Track Service Mechanism under the Prime Minister’s Office to ensure prompt and effective government services related to gas, electricity, banking, customs, and other regulatory agencies for export-oriented industries.

The Prime Minister listened attentively to the concerns raised by the BTMA delegation and acknowledged the significance of the challenges facing the primary textile industry. To facilitate a swift resolution, he directed the formation of a high-level committee comprising the Minister of Commerce, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning, and the Governor of Bangladesh Bank.

The committee has been instructed to convene its first meeting within the next week to review the sector’s challenges and submit recommendations. Based on those recommendations, the government will take appropriate measures to address the issues confronting the textile industry, the Prime Minister assured.

At the conclusion of the meeting, BTMA handed over a BDT 5 crore cheque to the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund. The association also noted that it had previously contributed BDT 5 crore to support the government’s initiative of distributing 100,000 sets of free school uniforms to primary school students.

The meeting was attended by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister along with several senior BTMA leaders and industry representatives, including A. Matin Chowdhury (Former President, BTMA), Md. Shamim Islam (Vice President, BTMA), Md. Badsha Mia (Director, BTMA), Chowdhury Mohammad Hanif Soaib (Director, BTMA), Syed Enayet Kabir (Former Director, BTMA), Engr. Rajib Haider (Former Director, BTMA), Md. Helal Mia (Chairman, Amanat Shah Group), and Samiul Islam (Managing Director, Munno Fabrics Limited).
