![]() Students confine Applied Human Science College Principal, demand her resignation Students of Government College of Applied Human Science, formerly known as Home Economics College, staged a protest outside the institution in Dhaka on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Principal Professor Dr Meherun Nessa. The protesters gathered in front of the principal's office around 10:30am, confining her inside and chanting slogans such as, “One-point, one demand, the principal must resign”. Police rescued the principal around 11:30pm. Moustak Sarker, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Lalbagh division, told journalists around midnight that she had been rescued earlier and was safe. However, students continued their demonstration on the road in front of the college until around 1:00am. According to the protesters, the dispute originated before the Durga Puja holidays over a farewell programme organised for final-year postgraduate students from five departments. The programme was initially scheduled to end at 10:00pm. However, following requests from students, the deadline was extended to midnight. The event eventually continued until 5:00am. Students alleged that the principal subsequently cancelled the residential hall seats of two students who had coordinated the programme, accusing them of using the auditorium beyond the permitted hours. They further claimed that she demanded Tk 12,600 to cover air-conditioning and electricity expenses as a condition for reinstating their seats. Tabassum, a postgraduate student, said the protest initially began over the cancellation of the two students' residential seats. She said the students repeatedly apologised to the principal, who accepted their apology but demanded Tk 12,600 as an auditorium bill for one night's use as punishment. “Students like us cannot afford to pay this amount,” she said. However, Principal Meherun Nessa presented a different account of the incident. She said she had allowed the programme to continue until midnight, but the students kept it running until 5:00am. She acknowledged cancelling the residential seats of two students out of anger over the incident. The principal said she later showed leniency after the students apologised but warned that disciplinary measures would be taken to prevent similar violations in the future. “They wasted electricity for a long time, and I will collect the bill from them. I issued the notice imposing the fine. That is my offence,” she said. Meherun Nessa also alleged that the students had asked her to sign a resignation letter written on a blank sheet of paper. “Why should I resign at their demand?” she questioned.
