Engr. threatened for not allowing bad bitumen

Engr. threatened for not allowing bad bitumen

A contractor has allegedly threatened a railway engineer publicly for not complying with his wishes of using poor materials in a road construction project in Kurigram.

According to locals, contractor Al Amin has been threatening engineer Abdur Razzaque for the last two days as the engineer refused to use Iranian bitumen for sealcoating the approaching road of the district's railway station.

Abdul Quader, a resident of the station area, said the contractor threatened the engineer to transfer him elsewhere. The contractor even told locals that he would not finish the project unless the engineer was transferred.

Contacted, the accused said he wanted to finish the project using Iranian bitumen on the road as the BPC (Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation) bitumen was not available in the market. But the engineer did not allow it.

He denied the allegation of threatening the engineer.

Asked, Abdur Razzaque, senior sub-assistant engineer (SSAE-Works) of the railways, he told that the road would not last long if construction work was done with Iranian bitumen.

BPC bitumen is available in the market but the contractor wants to use Iranian bitumen only to save money, he added.

"I am being threatened but I'm not afraid of it. I will make the road's sealcoat with BPC bitumen. This will make the road stronger and more sustainable," he said.

Contacted, Lalmonirhat Railway Divisional Engineer (DEn) Anwar Hossain said that he heard about the matter.

Efforts are being made to resolve the issue. The construction work has to be done as per the schedule, he said.

Construction work of approach road, road divider, footpath, drain, garden, and protection wall of Kurigram Railway Station started on July 9, 2020, at a cost of over BDT 1.6 crore.

Although the project was supposed to be completed in 180 days, there was still 10 percent work incomplete.
