![]() Palestinian President, Israeli defense minister hold rare talks The meeting was held in Ramallah in the West Bank on Sunday. This is the first formal Palestinian-Israeli meeting since the new government was formed in June, AFP reported. Ghasan Alyan, an Israeli military official, Hussein Al Sheikh, a senior Palestinian Authority official, and Majid Faraj, the Palestinian intelligence chief were also present in the meeting. The meeting focused on security and economic issues in Gaza and the West Bank. Later, in a tweet, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said Israel would work to strengthen the economic situation in the Palestinian part. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett recently visited the United States. There he met with US President Joe Biden. The meeting between Abbas and Gantz took place just hours after Naftali returned to Israel after a visit to the United States. The coalition government led by Benny Gantz is currently in power in Israel. “Israel wanted to take steps to strengthen the Palestinian Authority’s economy,” Benny Gantz told Abbas. They discussed security in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as the economic situation. A statement from Israel’s Defense Ministry said the two sides agreed to maintain contact and continue talks. Earlier, Palestinians protested last week against Israeli domination at the border and indiscriminate killings. At that time, the Israeli security forces attacked them. There have been several attacks before.
