Justice for mass killings first, even if it delays election: Jamaat ameer

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said those responsible for mass killings during July-August uprisings must be held accountable, even if it delays the upcoming elections.

Speaking as the chief guest at a workers' conference organised by the district unit of Jamaat at Govt Jubilee High School ground in Sunamganj today, he criticised the country's political landscape, alleging that those engaged in "deceptive politics" cannot bring real change.

"They used to send us abroad without passports, visas, or tickets; but now they are fleeing without those," he said indicating the Awami League men.

Referring to the execution of Jamaat leaders, Dr Shafiq said, "We do not fear death. Five of our top leaders were executed, but they never compromised with any worldly power. Before their executions, they uttered Alhamdulillah, performed prayers, and consoled their families during final meetings."

He also took a swipe at former Supreme Court judge Justice Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, saying, "Have you seen a Supreme Court judge sleeping on a banana leaf? That was his fate due to his misuse of power while in office."

"Our brightest minds leave the country for higher education and never return, whereas, in the past, the Mughals, British, and Portuguese came here seeking fortune. Now, the situation has reversed," he said.

On education, he pledged that if Jamaat comes to power, it will prioritise education and establish a modern, job-oriented system, where graduates receive professional certificates along with their degrees.

Highlighting the integrity of his party's activists, he said, "Our activists are not involved in land or waterbody extortion syndicates. They are not engaged in cases of manipulation either. If anyone commits a crime, let the law take its course, but innocent people must not be harassed. Since August 5, our activists have voluntarily ensured security for all religious communities for 15 consecutive days."

"Criticise us as much as possible. It will only make us work harder. If we fail to deliver, you have every right to abandon us," he said.

Shafiq added that if Jamaat gains power with public support, Sunamganj will witness rapid development. "If not, we will fight alongside the people to demand and ensure development," he said.

The event was presided over by Sunamganj district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Tofayel Ahmad. Among others, Jamaat's Assistant Secretary General Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, Dhaka North City Jamaat Ameer Muhammad Selim Uddin, Sylhet North City Jamaat Ameer Fakhrul Islam, Sylhet District Jamaat Ameer Maulana Habibur Rahman, former central Chhatra Shibir General Secretary Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir, and Sunamganj District Jamaat's Naib-e-Ameer Advocate Shamsuddin were present as special guests.
