James Anderson to Receive Knighthood for Contributions to Cricket

James Anderson, England's highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, is set to be honored with a knighthood in recognition of his contributions to the sport. The legendary fast bowler retired from Test cricket last summer, ending his career in whites with 704 wickets — the most by any fast bowler in the format’s history. Although he has stepped away from international cricket, Anderson continues to play domestic cricket.

In the UK, outgoing Prime Ministers can recommend individuals for honors like knighthoods across various fields, which are then approved by the King. Anderson is reportedly on the resignation honors list of Rishi Sunak, who stepped down as Prime Minister in November.

Among cricketers, others who have received knighthoods include England’s Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Geoffrey Boycott, and Ian Botham, as well as international legends like Australia’s Don Bradman, New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee, and West Indies’ Viv Richards. Recipients of this honor are entitled to use the title "Sir" before their names.

Richard Thompson, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), described the honor as a “well-deserved recognition” for Anderson, calling him an "England legend" who has given so much to the game.

Anderson made his international debut in a One Day International (ODI) against Australia in 2002, followed by his Test debut in May 2003. Over a career spanning more than two decades, the 42-year-old has played 188 Tests, 194 ODIs, and 19 T20 Internationals for England.

In addition to his international success, he has taken 1,114 wickets in first-class cricket, 358 in List A matches, and 41 in T20s.
