Trump Threatens to Impose New Tariffs on Smartphones U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that smartphones and other electronics manufactured in China will not be exempt from tariffs. He stated that these products are simply being placed under a new "tariff category," according to a report by the BBC. Last Friday, a government notice had suggested that some electronic products could receive relief from tariffs as high as 145%, which led to a rise in European stock markets on Monday. However, on Sunday, U.S. officials clarified that these products will now fall under a "semiconductor tariff" category. Trump added that he would present more details about the new tariffs on Monday. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, “We need to manufacture our pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and electronics domestically.” He noted that the new tariffs will be implemented alongside previously imposed global tariffs, which had been temporarily suspended for 90 days. A customs notice published on Saturday stated that smartphones, computers, and certain electronic products would be excluded from the 125% tariff imposed on China. However, Trump took to social media to clarify that there would be no exemptions for these products and called the news regarding the customs notice “incorrect.” He reiterated that these products are simply being moved under a different tariff category. Trump also announced plans to launch a "National Security Tariff Investigation" targeting semiconductors and the entire electronics supply chain. The White House stated that tariffs are being used as a strategic tool to secure better trade deals with other countries. They claimed that this move would help eliminate global trade imbalances and bring manufacturing and jobs back to the United States. However, Trump administration officials confirmed that there are currently no plans for a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Analysts believe that this situation could further escalate trade tensions between the U.S. and China. In response, China urged the United States to completely withdraw the new tariffs and return to the path of “mutual respect and cooperation.” |
