BNP Wants Elections by December: Asif Nazrul BNP has expressed its desire to see elections held by December, according to Legal Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul. He shared this information during a press briefing in front of the state guest house Jamuna on Wednesday afternoon, following a meeting between the BNP delegation and the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The BNP delegation arrived at Jamuna at around 12 PM to discuss various issues including the upcoming election. The meeting ended around 2 PM. The delegation was led by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and included Standing Committee members Salahuddin Ahmed, Jamiruddin Sircar, Mirza Abbas, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury. During the briefing, Asif Nazrul stated that BNP believes holding elections within December would be ideal. He added, “They mentioned that some of our advisors are unclear in their statements, and some government advisors give differing opinions. Regardless of what others say, our position is based on the consistent statements made by the Chief Advisor to the nation. If others make offhand remarks, they should not be taken seriously.” Clarifying further, he said, “There’s no intention to delay elections until May on purpose. When we say December to June, we mean that the elections should be held as soon as possible after December. It’s not that we plan to stay in power unnecessarily for an extra month or two.” The Legal Advisor also mentioned that BNP responded positively to the proposed Consensus Commission and has agreed to sit with the commission within the next 2–3 days. He noted that BNP assured them that a July declaration will come soon, and he felt the party is sincere about reforms. Asif Nazrul described the meeting as very sincere and open. “BNP spoke candidly. They said some interim government decisions have gone against them, and we explained that several decisions have been in their favor too. Delays in withdrawing politically motivated cases are being addressed—more than 7,000 cases have been withdrawn in the last three months. BNP has also proposed forming another tribunal, and we told them we are working toward that goal.” He concluded, “They said BNP has been persecuted for the past 15 years, and we showed respect for that. They also said BNP is now a reformist party, and we agreed with that view.” |
