India Launches Missile Strikes on Pakistan and PoK, Claims 70 Killed

The Indian military launched attacks in the dead of night on several locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). In these strikes, carried out just after midnight on Tuesday, the Indian forces fired at least 24 missiles at targets in Pakistan within just 25 minutes. India claims that at least 70 people were killed in the operation, though Pakistan’s military reports 26 casualties.

On Wednesday, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a press conference in Delhi where he shared detailed information about the strikes.

He stated that the goal of ‘Operation Sindoor’ was to prevent further cross-border attacks and dismantle terrorist infrastructure following the recent killings in Pahalgam.

"The retaliation by India was measured, proportional, responsible, and contained," Misri said. He added that India's response should be viewed in light of the UN Security Council statement issued on April 25, which called for justice against those involved in the Pahalgam attack.

The briefing, held at 10:30 a.m. Indian Standard Time, was attended by two female officers from the Indian Army and Air Force—Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Byomika Singh.

According to them, between 1:05 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday night, the Indian military destroyed nine terrorist camps across the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border.

Photos of the destroyed sites in Pakistan were shown at the briefing. The officers emphasized that Operation Sindoor did not target any Pakistani military installations or civilians; only selected terrorist infrastructure was attacked using advanced technology.

Colonel Sophia and Wing Commander Byomika claimed the first target was the Markaz Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur, a Jaish-e-Mohammed training center. The Bilal Mosque was said to house a Lashkar-e-Taiba training facility, and the site in Kotli was identified as another Lashkar base, which had been active in Poonch. All these locations are in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

They further stated that Indian forces also struck inside Pakistan’s interior, including the Sargaal Camp in Sialkot, located 6 kilometers from the international border, and Mehmuna Zoya Camp, a Hizbul Mujahideen base where the attackers involved in the Pahalgam incident were reportedly trained.

The officers also mentioned a strike on Markaz Tayyiba near Lahore, which they claimed was the training site for the 26/11 Mumbai attackers, including Ajmal Kasab.

Tensions had been escalating between the nuclear-armed neighbors following the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 Indian tourists on April 22. The missile strikes mark a sharp escalation. Reuters, citing an Indian government statement, confirmed the launch of Operation Sindoor by Indian armed forces.

Pakistan, however, alleges that India targeted civilian infrastructure. India maintains that no military or civilian Pakistani sites were targeted.
