Train Services in Southern Region Suspended for 12 Hours Due to Derailment Two coaches of the Dhaka-bound Jahangirabad Express train heading to Khulna derailed near the Bhanga Bamnokanda Junction due to a signal error by the pointman. As a result, train services on the Dhaka-Khulna, Dhaka-Benapole, and Dhaka-Rajbari routes have been suspended for 12 hours. The incident occurred around 9:10 PM on Friday night. Although no casualties were reported, around 600–700 passengers experienced significant hardship due to the disruption. Since Saturday morning, two relief trains equipped with cranes and over a hundred railway officials and staff from Ishwardi and Khulna have been working to recover the derailed coaches. Paksey Divisional Transportation Officer Hachina Khatun confirmed the incident and said, “We have brought in cranes from Rajbari and Khulna to restore the line since last night. The pointman, Nazrul Islam, was suspended for changing the signal without proper authorization. We have confirmed the error was his fault. A three-member investigation committee has been formed. We hope to resume train operations by noon.” Bhanga Junction Assistant Station Master Suman Barai explained, “The Jahangirabad Express derailed shortly after leaving Bhanga Railway Junction. One coach and the engine switched from one track to another due to the pointman’s mistake. Nazrul Islam, the responsible pointman, has been suspended.” He added, “Since 9:10 PM last night, train services across three southern routes via the Padma Bridge have remained suspended. Recovery efforts with cranes and railway staff from Rajbari and Khulna are ongoing. We hope to restore operations by noon.” Khairuzzaman Sikder, in-charge of the Bhanga Bamnokanda Railway Police Outpost, stated that train operations remain suspended due to the derailment. All passengers left the area using alternative transport during the night. |
