Abu Sayeed murder: Final report submitted to ICT
The investigation agency has submitted its final report to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) in connection with the killing of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, during the July mass uprising in Rangpur. The report has implicated 30 individuals in the murder. According to tribunal sources, the formal charge sheet is expected to be submitted to the prosecution on Thursday (26 June). Earlier, on 15 June, the tribunal directed investigators to submit the report by 14 July and fixed 26 June for a hearing in the case.
A three-member ICT bench headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder passed the order. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam, along with prosecutors Gazi Moinul Hossain, BM Sultan Mahmud, and SM Moinul Karim, appeared for the prosecution. Defence counsels included lawyers Rashedul Haque Khokon and Delowar Hossain Sohel. On 9 April, the tribunal ordered the production of four accused individuals and directed the investigation agency to submit its report by 15 June. According to the prosecution, Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police in Rangpur during a movement demanding reform in the government job quota system.
Former sub-inspector Amir Hossain and constable Sujon Chandra Roy were directly involved in the shooting, the prosecution said. Besides, university proctor Shariful Islam and Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash, among others, allegedly instigated and abetted the incident. The four accused are already in custody in connection with other cases.
