![]() 33 Held with 2,400 Bags of Cement During Smuggling Attempt to Myanmar The information was confirmed on Sunday (May 17) by Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujan. According to the Coast Guard, based on secret information, a daylong joint operation was conducted on Saturday (May 16) in the southwestern maritime area adjacent to Saint Martin’s Island by Coast Guard Outpost Shahpari, Coast Guard Station Saint Martin, and the Bangladesh Navy. During the operation, law enforcement personnel searched three suspicious fishing boats and recovered approximately 2,400 bags of cement worth around Tk 1.68 million. The cement was allegedly being transported illegally to Myanmar without paying customs duties and taxes. The three boats used in the smuggling operation were also seized, and 33 individuals were arrested. During preliminary interrogation, the detainees reportedly confessed that the cement had been loaded from different areas of Hatiya and Sandwip and was being transported to supply a banned group in Myanmar. Authorities said intelligence surveillance has been intensified to identify and arrest the masterminds behind such smuggling operations. Coordination among different law enforcement agencies has also been strengthened to curb cross-border smuggling activities. Legal procedures regarding the seized cement, fishing boats, and the arrested individuals are currently underway.
