Jhenaidah's Sohel Rana dies in Latvia: Bangladesh Foreign Ministry stands by to repatriate body

The family of Sohel Rana, who was taken to Latvia by a gang of brokers under the pretext of taking him to Europe legally, is in mourning and worried over his death. The family alleges that he died in a forest in Latvia on October 8 after being subjected to inhuman torture and physical abuse by the gang. Even after his death, the gang has been accused of demanding money from the family on October 9 and 10 and sending videos of the torture.

After the news of Sohel Rana's death was confirmed, the biggest challenge facing the family was bringing his body back to Bangladesh. In addition to the grief of losing a loved one abroad, his wife and two children were distraught over the fear of not being able to bring the body back to the country and bury it at their own address.

In such a situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh stood by with humanitarian assistance . With the cooperation of the Ministry's Senior Assistant Secretary of the Welfare Division, Afrin Haque , and the Director of the Welfare Division, Lokman Hossain, and other concerned officials, the process of bringing the body back to the country has progressed. The family has informed that officials of the Bangladesh Embassy in Poland also played an important role in this regard.

Family members said they contacted the relevant authorities in Latvia and the Bangladesh Embassy in Poland to confirm Sohel Rana's whereabouts and death. With the help of the Foreign Ministry and the embassy, ??the family learned on October 12 that Sohel Rana had died on October 8.

Meanwhile, family sources said that the Latvian authorities had given a deadline of October 19 to make arrangements to receive and repatriate the body. If arrangements are not made within the stipulated time, there is a risk that the body will be buried there as per local rules. As a result, efforts to repatriate the body have begun against the clock.

According to the family, it would have cost around 1 million taka to bring the body back to the country. In this situation, the cooperation, communication and coordination of government officials has given the family a ray of hope. The relatives said that the concerned officials have received the family's calls even during the holidays and have provided necessary cooperation and guidance.

The only wish of Sohel Rana's wife and two children was that their beloved man's body be brought back to their homeland. That the children may find the address of their father's grave in their own country. The cooperation of government officials standing by this wish carries special significance for the grieving family.

The death of an expatriate can in no way fill the void left by his family. However, in times of crisis, the support of relevant state institutions and officials can be a great source of hope for helpless families.

It is essential to thoroughly investigate the allegations against the brokers in the death of Sohel Rana and ensure accountability of those responsible. At the same time, ensuring the safety of Bangladeshis traveling abroad in the hope of employment and taking effective measures against human trafficking and fraud also require renewed serious consideration.

Just as Sohel Rana's tragic fate has brought to the fore the horrors of illegal immigration and the fraud of brokers, the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant officials in the efforts to repatriate his body has also highlighted the importance of fulfilling humanitarian responsibilities.

The people of the country expect a Bangladesh that stands by its citizens in danger, strives to ensure the last farewell of those who die abroad with dignity, and extends a humanitarian hand to the grieving families.
