Iran Offers to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Within Two Days if US Meets Conditions

Iran on Monday declared its readiness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days should the United States agree to its conditions. The announcement came as US President Donald Trump issued a fresh war threat during a rally ahead of the pivotal US midterm elections.

A senior Iranian official framed the offer to reopen the critical energy corridor, which has been blockaded by Tehran since the war began in February, as a gesture of "good faith" following intense mediation efforts to avert further conflict. The blockade has severely impacted global markets, with the narrow gateway normally carrying one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption.

"The possibility of implementing this plan in two days is another indication of Iran’s good-faith approach," foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei told reporters. "We have stated that, if Iran’s demands are met, it would be possible to restore security to the Strait of Hormuz and resume the negotiating process within a short period."

This follows a seven-day proposal made by Iran in September, conditional on the US ending the war on all fronts, unfreezing Iranian assets, lifting oil sanctions, and halting the counter-blockade of Iranian ports. Baqaei confirmed that messages are being exchanged through mediators but emphasized that progress "depends" on the US accepting these terms.

Simultaneously, President Trump adopted a belligerent tone at a rally in Iowa, with energy prices and inflation dominating the midterm debate. "The only reason why I’m not finished with Iran is I want to be nice. I want to try and save all those lives if I can. But at some point, we’re going to have to give them the hammer," Trump told voters.

This is the latest in a series of threats since the war began on February 28 with a joint attack by the US and Israel. On Saturday, Trump referenced specific targets, including a suspected nuclear site at Pickaxe mountain, which Iran denies is a nuclear facility.

Responding to the threats, Baqaei warned, "Any act of aggression against Iran, any military attack against Iran, by whatever means, will be met with a powerful, immediate, and comprehensive response from us."

International diplomatic activity is intensifying. Officials from Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have engaged in talks with Iran, and US Vice President JD Vance reportedly sent a letter to Tehran. Furthermore, Oman’s ruler, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, discussed the conflict with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. A joint statement called for diplomatic solutions and urged a ceasefire.

China also reiterated its backing for Iran. In a meeting with Ali Bagheri Kani, a senior Iranian national security official, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated Beijing supports Tehran in "safeguarding its own sovereignty and security," urging all parties to focus on political solutions.

In an interview released Sunday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted that Washington must accept a new transit route for the strait agreed upon by Iran and Oman, reduce regional troop levels, and lift "economic asphyxiation" sanctions imposed by the US since August.
