![]() 26 Lawyers File High Court Petition Demanding Higher Judicial Budget, More Judges, and Better Facilities Twenty-six lawyers filed a public interest litigation (PIL) writ petition with the High Court today, seeking directions for adequate budgetary allocations for the Supreme Court, the appointment of additional judges, and improved professional facilities for legal practitioners. Led by Barrister Mohammad Humaun Kabir Pallob, the petitioners requested the High Court to direct the relevant authorities to appoint an adequate number of judges to both the Appellate Division and the High Court Division, constitute sufficient benches, and upgrade essential infrastructure for lawyers including chamber space, seating arrangements, sanitation, drinking water, and digital services. Highlighting a severe resource imbalance, the petition noted that the Supreme Court was allocated Tk 291 crore in the proposed 2026-27 national budget of nearly Tk 9.38 lakh crore. The petitioners pointed out that as of August 2026, the Supreme Court had approximately 685,830 pending cases being handled by just 105 judges across its two divisions. To address these systemic challenges, the writ asks for the formulation of a reasonable, needs-based judicial budget framework created in direct consultation with the Chief Justice and the Supreme Court. Barrister Pallob emphasized that true judicial independence and effective justice delivery cannot be achieved without sufficient financial backing. A High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan is expected to hear the petition next Sunday.
