BNP Leader’s Daughter-in-Law Fears for Safety, Alleges Death Threats and Online Harassment

BNP Leader’s Daughter-in-Law Fears for Safety, Alleges Death Threats and Online Harassment

Naima Khandaker, daughter-in-law of former minister and BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, has expressed concerns for her safety, alleging that she has been receiving death threats and facing harassment on social media.

Naima, a social worker, is the daughter-in-law of Khandaker Mosharraf, who is also the Member of Parliament for Cumilla-1 (Daudkandi-Meghna).

In a Facebook post on Friday night, she said she feared for her life and had not received adequate assistance from the police despite repeatedly seeking their intervention.

Police, however, said she had not filed any written complaint at the police station.

Naima serves as the executive director and secretary of the J Huda Welfare Society. She is also the joint general secretary of the Cumilla district branch of the National Women's Sports Association.

"Where is my security? As a woman, who will ensure justice for me?" she wrote at the beginning of her Facebook post.

She appealed to the residents of Daudkandi, concerned citizens, the government and relevant authorities to take notice of the situation.

Naima alleged that several Facebook accounts in Daudkandi were being used at the direction of an influential group to threaten and harass her. She expressed fears that she could face serious harm at any time.

She said her husband, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain Tushar, was abroad with his father, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, for medical treatment. Taking advantage of their absence, some individuals were allegedly threatening her, spreading misinformation and conducting online harassment while she was staying alone at home.

"I suspect that I am being threatened by another faction of the BNP," Naima told New Age.

She claimed that she had been contacting the officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Police Station for the past 20 days but had yet to receive any effective assistance.

Speaking on Saturday evening, Naima said she was facing harassment and false propaganda in her own locality despite being a member of a prominent political family.

"If this can happen to me, what is the safety of women from ordinary families?" she questioned.

She stressed that she was not seeking any special privileges because of her family background but wanted the same respect, security and justice as any other citizen.

"I do not want any special benefits because my father-in-law is Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and my husband is Mahbub Hossain Tushar. I only want respect, security and justice as an ordinary citizen," she said.

She urged police to identify those operating the Facebook accounts allegedly spreading misinformation about her and issuing threats.

Contacted on Saturday, Daudkandi Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Sajedul Islam said police were looking into the matter.

"Naima Khandaker verbally informed us about Facebook posts targeting her. We asked her to submit a written complaint. We also advised her to file a written complaint with the Cyber Crime Unit to help identify the Facebook accounts involved," the OC said.
