![]() PM Tarique Rahman Calls High-Level Cabinet Meeting as Garment Workers Demand Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called a meeting with several ministers and advisers to address ongoing labor unrest regarding garment workers' wage demands, according to Cabinet Division sources. The meeting is expected to take place after Maghrib prayers and will likely include the ministers of finance, home affairs, and labor, along with Adviser Mahadi Amin. The discussions come amid widespread labor protests in Mirpur, Ashulia, and Gazipur, where garment workers are demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. Due to the escalating protests, Labor and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury canceled his scheduled trip to the United Arab Emirates and met with the prime minister earlier today at 1:00 PM. Earlier in the morning, around 11:30 AM, the government officially established a minimum wage board to review wages in the garment sector. Cabinet sources noted that Prime Minister Rahman had directed officials to set up the board two days prior, but the process was delayed while waiting for worker representative nominations. Announcing the board's formation at the Secretariat, Minister Ariful expressed hope that the board would meet promptly. He urged striking workers to leave the streets and return to their jobs now that their request for a wage board had been met. The minister also expressed frustration over factory owners declaring unnecessary holidays today, despite assurances from labor leaders that workers would stay on the job once the wage board was announced. Additionally, Ariful accused certain political organizations of intentionally fueling instability. The newly appointed chairman of the Minimum Wage Board, Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman, has been instructed to begin consultations with employer representatives, labor leaders, and independent members to determine a new wage structure. However, no official date has been set for the board's first meeting, and no timeline has been provided for finalizing the new minimum wage.
