![]() RMG manufacturers threaten factory closures if unrest continues Readymade garment (RMG) manufacturers warned on Sunday that continued disorder and violence could force them to shut down production units under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, despite the government's formation of a new wage board. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Mahmud Hasan Khan issued the warning following an emergency meeting with members at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka. The session was attended by roughly 235 members representing 600 to 700 factories. The industry's warning comes alongside the government's announcement of a six-member wage board tasked with revising minimum wages for RMG workers following widespread protests demanding a monthly minimum wage of Tk 30,000. Addressing the ongoing disruptions, Khan urged labor federations to help restore calm and called on law enforcement agencies to take firm action against anyone violating the law. “Factories open in the morning, only to be forced to shut down an hour later due to disruptions. We need a permanent solution to this crisis,” Khan stated. He also called on the Ministry of Home Affairs to send a strong message on law enforcement and suggested that wage board members issue joint media updates to reassure workers and stakeholders during deliberations. According to industry sources, ongoing labor disputes left at least 529 garment factories closed on Sunday across key industrial hubs, including Mirpur, Ashulia, and Gazipur.
