Attack and Looting at 14 Homes in Jashore; Case Filed Against Jamaat Members

In the Rupdia Madhyapara area of Jashore Sadar upazila, 14 extremely poor families were attacked, their homes vandalized and looted. On Sunday morning, a group of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists, armed with local weapons, launched a two-hour-long assault. The victims later filed a case at the local police station.

On Tuesday, top leaders from both the BNP and Jamaat visited the site and demanded the arrest of the real culprits. Police have confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend those involved.

According to police and local sources, the 14 landless families had been living on the land in Rupdia Madhyapara for over 50 years with the permission of the original landowner, Saeed Box. After his death, local Jamaat leader Khabir Khan and his followers claimed the land and repeatedly tried to seize it, but failed even after taking legal action. Following a political shift on August 5, they began threatening to evict the families.

On April 13, around 60–70 armed Jamaat members reportedly attacked the area, destroying homes and physically assaulting men and women present. The victims claimed the attackers not only vandalized their homes but also looted all valuables. Though police arrived after the attack, no immediate action was taken, and the victims continue to receive threats.

That night, one of the victims, rickshaw driver Milon Hossain, filed a case at Kotwali Police Station. The complaint stated that most of the attackers were local Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, activists, and supporters.

On Tuesday, a BNP delegation led by Khulna divisional acting organizational secretary Anindya Islam Amit and district president Syed Saberul Haque Sabur visited the site. Victims broke down in tears during their visit. Amit described the attack as “barbaric destruction” and assured full support for justice and rehabilitation. He added that such acts should not be defended by any political party and called the attackers "criminals causing social unrest."

Earlier, Jashore district Jamaat Ameer Professor Golam Rasul also visited the area and condemned the attack, claiming it was carried out by criminals and not politically motivated. He alleged that some opportunists are using the incident to politically smear Jamaat.

Kotwali Police Station’s Investigation Officer Kazi Babul Hossain confirmed that the case is under investigation and police have visited the site multiple times.

According to Milon Hossain, the attack caused personal losses of around BDT 120,000. His wife’s jewelry worth BDT 70,000 was stolen. Others reported similar losses: Rajia lost gold worth BDT 105,000, Ismail lost BDT 60,000 in cash, Priya’s gold earrings were stolen, and Ansar lost BDT 70,000. Siddiq's house suffered damage worth BDT 500,000 including furniture, TV, and fridge, plus BDT 35,000 in cash.

Several people, including Ansar, Sufia, Rajia, Janu, Parvin, and Salma Begum, were injured in the attack.

Victims alleged that local Jamaat leader Khabir Khan and his men continue to threaten them to vacate their homes or face arson attacks. Fearing further violence, they are living in constant anxiety.

In light of the situation, on Monday, a BNP team led by Sadar Upazila BNP General Secretary Anjurul Haque Khokon provided food and cash support to the affected families.
