Scuffle Between Two Factions of Labor Party in Sarishabari on May Day Rally, 5 Injured

At least five people were injured in a scuffle between two factions of the Labor Party during a May Day rally in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur district.
The clash occurred on Thursday morning in the premises of the Upazila Parishad.

Among the injured are Dulal Mia (55), a member of the Upazila Labor Party and Labor Affairs Secretary of the Kamrabad Union Labor Party, and Rubel Sheikh (35), a Labor Party activist. Both are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Eyewitnesses, requesting anonymity, said, “Around 11 am, various labor organizations joined the rally organized by the upazila administration. As the rally was passing through the municipality premises, an argument broke out over giving way. This later escalated into a physical clash between two Labor Party factions in the Upazila Parishad area.”

Dulal Mia, speaking to The Daily Star from the hospital, said, “I was assaulted following an argument with Morshed Talukder, the General Secretary of the Upazila Labor Party.”

However, Morshed Talukder denied the allegation and countered, “When our group from the Jamuna Fertilizer area arrived, some individuals refused to give way, leading to a heated exchange. Later, they attacked our leaders and activists back at the Upazila Parishad premises.”

He further claimed, “Those involved in the incident were previously affiliated with the Awami League. They recently joined the BNP and are now causing unrest within the party.”

Regarding the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Sarishabari Police Station, Md. Chand Mia, said, “No written complaint has been filed yet. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.”
