Yunus meets three major political parties today to discuss polls, renewed tensions
Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus will hold a meeting with the country’s three major political parties today to discuss a sudden rise in socio-political tensions as well as the February general election.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, came up with the information while speaking at a press conference, in front of State Guesthous Jamuna, the official residence of the chief adviser, on Saturday.
Prof Yunus will start talks with Jamaat-e-Islami leaders at 4:30pm, NCP leaders at 6:30pm and BNP leaders at 7:30pm, said the chief adviser's press wing.
The chief adviser is going to hold the meeting at a time when the country’s political situation has heated up following an attack by law enforcers on Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur during clashes with Jatiya Party, widely known as an ally of the ousted authoritarian Awami League government.
Law enforcers claimed they were compelled to use force after Gono Odhikar Parishad activists disregarded repeated pleas by officials for calm.
Shafiqul Alam noted that the current situation in the country and the election will be discussed in the meetings. The chief adviser will hold the meeting with the BNP, Jamaat and NCP separately.
Asked about the government's thoughts on the election in the current situation, he said, “An environment for holding the election exists. The election will be held on time. It will be held in the first half of February before Ramadan. No force will be able to stop the election."
