The army on Monday said it has no involvement in student union elections expected to take place this month and next month, rejecting “repeated” claims that the force would intervene as “false and unfounded rumours.”
The army previously issued a press release, clarifying that there is no scope for the military service to intervene in the polls at different public universities, particularly Dhaka University, it asserted in a statement published on the official Facebook page.
Yet, a vested group is repeatedly making unfounded claims in this regard with a view to “undermining stability,” which could disrupt the overall election environment, the army said in its Monday statement.
Rather, the Bangladesh Army hopes that the student union elections, being organised after a long time, are held orderly, peacefully and in keeping with proper democratic practices, setting an example for the upcoming general elections, it added.
The Army wishes good luck to all the student union post candidates, voters and everyone else concerned, the statement said.
It is worth noting that elections to central student unions and hall unions will be held at Dhaka University on Tuesday, Jahangirnagar University on Thursday, and Rajshahi University on 25 September. Elections to the student bodies at Chittagong University will be held on 12 October.
