Vance Blames Iran War for Republican Midterm Losses as 2028 Speculation Grows

US Vice President JD Vance stated on Wednesday that the war in Iran was the primary cause of the Republican Party's defeat in the midterm elections, distancing himself from the increasingly unpopular conflict ahead of a potential 2028 presidential campaign.

"The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night," Vance wrote in a lengthy post on X, referring to President Donald Trump’s acknowledgment that the conflict contributed to the losses while maintaining it was justified.

Addressing defenders of the military action, Vance added: "If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there."

The Democratic victories in Tuesday's elections have raised questions about Vance's position as the presumptive frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, though he has not yet formally declared his candidacy.

Vance, a long-standing critic of foreign military interventionism, was reportedly skeptical behind closed doors of the military campaign launched by the Trump administration and Israel in late February.

Acknowledging a shift among the party's voter base, Vance noted that key demographics had turned away from the administration due to the war's economic fallout. "The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026," he said.

Citing internal polling data, Vance highlighted that the Iran war and its broader economic impact alongside growing voter desire to re-evaluate the US relationship with Israel were the decisive factors behind the shift.
