The country's total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases now stands at 482

Three more Covid-19 patients have died in Bangladesh in the last 24 hours, taking the country's death toll to 30.

Besides, 58 more people contracted the novel coronavirus during the same period, according to Health Minister Zahid Maleque.

Briefing the daily online press briefing from Dhaka around 2:30pm on Saturday, he said that the country's total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases was now at 482.

The minister said testing would be conducted in three more centres alongside the 17 around the country where samples of suspected patients are currently being tested.

Dr Abul Kalam Azad, the director general of health services directorate, also said that samples would be collected from community clinics across the country.

During the briefing, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Director Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora said samples of 954 people were tested in the last 24 hours.

She said 58 of them — 48 men and 10 women — tested positive for Covid-19, the deadly disease caused by a new strain of the coronavirus.

Among the newly cases, 14 were in Dhaka and eight in Narayanganj — the two clusters with highest number of infections.

The IEDCR director also said that at least 70% people from the total 482 patients were men.

Of the latest deceased, one died in Dhaka city while two others outside the capital, she said, adding that the dead were 38, 55 and 74 years old.

Dr Meerjady also said that three more individuals recovered in past 24 hours, raising the number of those making recovery to 36.

On Friday, six Covid-19 patients had died, which was the highest in a day since the country confirmed its first death on March 18. The country’s first three cases were confirmed on March 8.

The fast spreading deadly disease, since it originated in China’s Wuhan city in December last year, has so far infected more than 1,715,971 people and claimed 103,800 lives worldwide, according to worldometer.
