Lord Swire KCMG, member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom and deputy chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) said that the Commonwealth is an amazing opportunity for Bangladeshi companies to explore 56 countries of untapped potential and limitless possibilities.

He was speaking  at the pre-event press conference on the CTIF, jointly organized by the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) in partnership with the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ZI Foundation in the capital on Sunday.

The Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman said the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Forum (CTIF) will help Bangladesh in sharing views with the participating countries regarding the issues that may arise after graduating from the LDC.

Speaking as the chief guest, also said that these kinds of events with international business partners will help Bangladesh by providing an advantage regarding idea sharing and understanding the experiences.

“It will give policymakers good suggestions and directions to take policy decisions. Moreover, it will also give us a huge opportunity to exchange views on how other countries are facing the crisis,” he added.

This is the first-ever Commonwealth Trade and Investment Forum organized in Bangladesh, which is going to be held on September 13-14, 2023 in Dhaka.

The forum was previously organized in other member states of the Commonwealth such as the United Kingdom, Singapore, Kenya, Rwanda, Malta and other countries.

Salman F Rahman also said that this is going to be an important event to showcase the tremendous changes Bangladesh achieved in the last 14 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina regarding the GDP, which was $91.6 billion in 2008 and $460.2 billion in 2022.

“We are an active participant and partner of the Commonwealth. Our trade is increasing gradually and there are vast potentials. Commonwealth members include large African economies like South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, and booming economies like India, Singapore and Malaysia. Even Canada is also a member of the Commonwealth,” he added.

He also said, if the business communities of all these member countries work together, it will be a win-win situation for all.

Responding to another question, he said that this is a new Bangladesh with improved infrastructure, developed traffic issues and 100 special economic zones (SEZ).

In his speech, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said that Bangladesh is now an icon of development with numerous opportunities for investors including reduced interest rates, ease of doing business, infrastructure and uninterrupted power supply.
