The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has intensified a citywide crackdown on extortionists, drug traffickers, illegal arms holders, and online gambling networks from 1 May.

Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar made the disclosure at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre on Mintoo Road of the capital today.

He said the move comes to check extortion, drug trade, illegal weapons display, and online gambling activities across the capital.

"A coordinated security strategy has been implemented, including block raids, intelligence surveillance, and CCTV monitoring to curb criminal networks," he also said.

In the past 48 hours, police arrested 58 listed and 94 unlisted extortionists, seizing account records, transaction data, and video evidence, he added.

The drives against drugs and illegal arms also led to significant recoveries and arrests, he continued.

"We are giving special focus on cybercrime, with monitoring teams tracking online gambling and fraud," he said.

The drives have also been conducted in markets, terminals, and other sensitive areas, he said.

Permanent and temporary police camps have been set up in key locations like Bosila and Karwan Bazar, he added.

He also said they will further expand operations with hotspot-based surveillance, more CCTV installations, enhanced intelligence activities, and stronger community policing.

Sarwar has urged citizens to report suspicious activities, assuring confidentiality, and reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against all forms of crime.

DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam and Addition Commissioner (Detective Branch) Md Shafiqul Islam, were present at the briefing.
