Keep promise not to trim workers: Quader to garment owners

Road, Transport and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday has called upon the garment owners to keep their promises of not to trim any workers in the time of crisis.

He made the call in a video message from his residence in the capital.

“Before opening the garments, the owners had promised that no workers will be laid off. The factory will be operated by the workers staying in Dhaka and those who are in different areas or villages – a portion of the wages will be sent to them, in the meantime, they will be discouraged from coming to Dhaka,” said Obaidul Quader.

But what we see that many workers are entering Dhaka daily, he said, claiming: “they have been called from the office.”

We heard yesterday that a factory in Gazipur announced to lay off or trimming. This was not supposed to happen, said the minister in the video message. “The government has already taken various initiatives to protect the export sector, including low-interest incentives to protect them.”

“I believe the owners will set an example of generosity in this time of crisis. The government is by your side. So, stay by the side of the workers and keep your promises,” he said.

Calling for the inclusion of transport workers in the relief list, the Bridges Minister said the list was being run by the district administration. “The transport workers have been instructed to provide relief like other workers as per the instructions of the Prime Minister.”

He also hoped that the district administration would take the matter seriously.

Mentioning that the government’s testing capacity against coronavirus has increased a lot now, Quader said that many people are keeping the virus secret even though they have symptoms. This is bringing danger. “I request you to contact the hotline if any symptoms appear. I urge everyone to keep an eye on it. “

“The Prime Minister is constantly monitoring the various activities in dealing with the coronavirus crisis. Put your trust in Sheikh Hasina and put faith in Allah. Inshallah, we will win the war,” said Obaidul Quader.

Four people, including a police sub-inspector, were died while performing duties in the frontline coronavirus battle. The Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and hoped for a quick recovery for those who got infected.

He also thanked the frontline doctors, nurses, physicians, technicians, and health workers for their bravery and request them to continue their activities.

“We already lost a doctor, a health worker, a journalist, and a banker,” he said.

Obaidul Quader also wished for the best to the police, RAB, army, journalists, and those who are fighting against coronavirus from frontline to ensure emergency services at the field level.
