India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar commented that no other country desires Bangladesh's well-being more than India.
He said, "It is in our DNA. As well-wishers and friends, I believe we hope they will walk the right path and do the right thing."
He made these remarks during an interactive session organized by a TV channel at the Rising India summit in New Delhi on Wednesday.
On the topic of Bangladesh, Jaishankar further stated, "Elections are necessary for democracy. Through this, a mandate is given and renewed. Therefore, we hope they (Bangladesh) will go down that path."
He also said, "Our relationship with Bangladesh is unique because of historical reasons. It is essentially a people-to-people relationship."
Jaishankar mentioned that during a meeting last week in Bangkok between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Professor Muhammad Yunus, New Delhi expressed concerns about the 'cultivation of extremism' in Bangladesh.
In response to a question, Jaishankar said, "We are concerned about the statements of the people of Bangladesh. We are concerned about attacks on minorities. I believe we have spoken openly about these concerns."
