Chief Adviser Seeks UK Assistance for the Development of the Country's Health Sector

In order to strengthen Bangladesh's healthcare system, the Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has called for closer cooperation with the United Kingdom. He made this request on Wednesday (April 9) when the UK's Trade Envoy, Baroness Rosie Winterton, met with the Chief Adviser at the State Guest House, Jamuna.

During the meeting, both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening bilateral relations. Baroness Winterton expressed satisfaction with the ongoing reforms, stating that there is a long and trusted relationship between the two countries.

Professor Yunus remarked that this is a transformational time for Bangladesh, as the country is focusing on institutional restructuring and re-prioritization. He highlighted the shortage of skilled healthcare workers, especially nurses, and pointed out that nursing is not just a national issue, but a global necessity. He added that they aim to train more nurses, not just for Bangladesh but for the entire world.

The Chief Adviser also called on the UK for support in strengthening the health sector, given the lack of sufficient resources in Bangladesh. He mentioned that government-run health services are nearly ineffective and emphasized that the UK could play a significant role in this area. Another promising sector for collaboration is the pharmaceutical industry. He urged the UK to advocate for the removal of patent protection, so that every country can produce vaccines in an affordable, social business model.

Both sides discussed broader areas of strategic cooperation, including education, the textile industry, defense, and aviation. Professor Yunus welcomed UK assistance in developing the education system, modernizing the textile sector, and exploring new areas of cooperation in defense and aviation.

The two leaders expressed interest in training, technology exchange, and long-term partnerships in these fields. Emphasizing gender equality, Professor Yunus stated that they prioritize women's participation in all sectors, with women's empowerment being at the center of their development strategy.

Baroness Winterton expressed the UK government's support for the current reform agenda and also met with Ali Riaz, the head of Bangladesh's constitutional reform program.

Regarding the timing of the next national elections, the Chief Adviser stated that if political parties agree on a limited reform process, elections could be held as early as December. However, if a broader reform approach is chosen, the elections might take place in June.

The meeting was also attended by BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun and the Chief Adviser’s office Chief Coordinator Lamia Morshed.
