![]() Uphold Liberation War Spirit and Rights, Urges Dr Kamal Hossain Prominent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain called on Tuesday for an independent judiciary, free and fair elections, and freedom of expression to uphold the fundamental principles of Bangladesh's constitution. In a written statement delivered as chief guest at a discussion organized by the Democratic Lawyers Association (DLAB) at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) auditorium to mark Constitution Day, Dr Kamal emphasized that the struggle to safeguard citizens' rights remains ongoing. “The Constitution of Bangladesh is the product of our nation's struggle. Through the Liberation War, we dreamt of building an exploitation-free and democratic state,” said Dr Kamal, who chaired the committee that drafted the nation's original 1972 constitution. “Nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism are the four fundamental principles of the 1972 Constitution. The people are the source of all state power.” His statement, read on his behalf by DLAB Publicity Secretary Sanjid Rahman Shuvo, urged all citizens to work together to build a democratic and discrimination-free nation where no individual faces prejudice based on religion, gender, race, or political identity. Dr Kamal also paid tribute to the four national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmad, Capt M Mansur Ali, and AHM Qamaruzzaman. Addressing the event, titled “Human Rights, Democracy, Independent Judiciary and the Fundamental Principles of the 1972 Constitution,” DLAB President Subrata Chowdhury urged the government to prevent national division and preserve the historical continuity of the 1971 Liberation War, the 1990 uprising, and the July Mass Uprising. Chowdhury warned against attempts by grassroots opposition forces to erase key historical milestones and criticized the concept of "resetting Bangladesh," arguing that the nation must not discard its historical foundations spanning 1952, 1962, 1969, 1971, and 1990. He further cautioned that the country's future would remain vulnerable if mob rule and religious extremism are allowed to regain ground. The discussion was also addressed by SCBA President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Professor Abu Sayeed, senior lawyer Sara Hossain, and DLAB General Secretary Hasan Tarique Chowdhury, among others.
